December Healthy Bites
Winter is finally here in Wisconsin. There's a few things you need to keep in mind to keep your pet happy and healthy!
Frostbite and Hypothermia are both serious conditions but very easily prevented. Keep your dog indoors for the winter or provide a warm heated area if your dog must be kept outside. Moisturize your pet's skin and paws by adding coconut oil to paws, and coconut or fish oil supplements in it's food. Never leave your dog unattended in a car, ever.
In Wisconsin, we salt our roads to keep us safe. Unfortunately, the salt can cause dryness with our pet's skin if it comes in contact. Wipe off paws with a warm towel after walking outside! In addition to this, our pets love the taste of salt. The road salt is not just salt, it is often mixed with different chemicals to make it more effective at melting ice. Do not allow your pet to eat this, as it can make them very ill.
Keep your dog out of Antifreeze or other chemicals that are used in winter time, as these can be fatal in small amounts.
With these few tips in mind, your dog will have plenty of fun in the snow! Just make sure he's not getting too wet or cold.
